New Storage Location Partially Used

Post by Brandon »

All, I apologize in advance as this is probably answered in here somewhere but I couldn't find it.
I have 7 cameras set up running with the latest BI release and recording continuously.
I have a 'New" location on an SSD and BI configured to move to the 'Stored' location on a WD purple spinning disk.

5 of the 7 cameras record to New storage initially and BI moves to Stored as I want. 2 of them record straight to the Stored location. I've compared the Camera Settings Record tab on all of them and don't see a difference.

Do you know what else I might try to get all 7 to do initial recording to New on the SSD?

(The SSD has a lot of free space so it's not a space issue)

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

For a locally installed spinning hard drive I always advise to write directly to the hard drive. There is no real advantage to writing to the SSD then getting Bi to move and during the move of the files BI will use a lot of resources.

I have heard some people saying writing new clips to an SSD improves the ability to view alerts but again personally I’ve not noticed any delays or improvements on my system.

I do have "New" on a ssd and it works well enough for me not to try anything else. If the screenshot you have added is for a camera that is NOT writing to New, then something is seriously wrong.

I suggest getting the details for one of the cameras that is misbehaving and recreating it (rather than cloning it) to find out if the config is up the spout. That is a weird one.

2 of them record straight to the Stored location
Stupid question: Have you verified that those two cameras are using the same New folder as the others in the Record tab? Can you prove to yourself that they are recording to Stored and not being moved there instead? If you select an offending camera, and click the Record icon in the console, it should display where it's recording to in the camera border.

Don't think me daft for asking what may be obvious, I just don't want to assume anything. I always try to prove that what I think is happening is happening.

Also, have those two cameras always recorded to Stored or was it after some change? If it worked properly before, you might consider importing the BI REG file from the date that it worked. BI keeps 3 backups of that REG file by default. When testing this way, I manually export the current REG file and name it something different so I can recover if I screw the pooch. Then import a previous REG and manually restart the service. Then I check the camera record settings to see if they're different from today's settings.

Just tossing out ideas in an attempt to help.

Thank you all very much for the helpful replies.
I appreciate all of the guidance/suggestions.

In the general settings I had the New storage set to 10GB or 1Day. I'm still not completely sure of the criteria or precedence or scope of some of these settings but the New folder location is on a 500GB SSD. It was honoring the setting and keeping the total usage on that drive at 10GB (which I guess didn't allow room for all 7 cameras to us it). I increased that setting to 100GB and now I see files for all 7 cameras. I'll further increase it to 250GB now that I better understand how that's working.

Thank you again for the replies and help.

Nice catch, I think you've nailed it. A 10GB "New" folder wouldn't have room for more than a couple of cameras unless you had BI5 "combine or cut" for each camera set to some minute value. My "combine or cut" is set to 4GB for each camera, so I think that would do it.

I have "New" on a separate 250GB SSD and have selected 200GB for it in BI5 settings. I also have it set to 7 days, but in reality it fills up in a couple of days, so that would only trigger if something wasn't working.
