To be clear, the substreams are the workhorse streams under the surface of everything else. You don't need to record them. They mainly do the heavy lifting at reduced resolution which saves tremendous amounts of CPU horsepower. Main streams will always be recorded for motion detection and alerts unless otherwise specified.

There is quite a bit of info here if you start pecking around. Just stay away from all the AI/CPAI stuff until getting a handle on how the basic motion detection stuff works first.

The status/ cameras window will then tell you what is happening:

1. HA - If you have HA working, it will highlight it. I don't.
2. Codec - I use a mixture of H264 and H265. Seems OK here.
3. MPixels - shows main/sub where applicable.
4. FPS - I use 10 to 12 FPS. Saves hard drive space. Hopefully CPU too.
