fwiw - if anyone runs into this problem (corrupt MP4 conversions) Ken at BI support nailed it. He suggested unchecking the "2 pass for fast open" option on the convert/export page. That's all it needed. I don't remember enabling it (or not) but that was all I needed to save MP4 files again.
This worked. thanks!! The quality looks worse than when I was on BI4, but at least it's not choppy anymore.

Bi now allows it to be used unregistered for view & export only.
Not sure if this would work in your situation. Might be worth looking into.

In the 5.1.0 update released February 16, 2020, one of the updates...
- Once the evaluation period is over, the software will continue to run as a “viewer only.”
This allows BVR files to be opened and exported without a software license.
I installed BI on my other machine, and now that the trial period has expired, I can no longer view .bvr files. Bummer.
