Connections get lost/dropped? New user looking for advice

Post by DougM »

Greetings experts!
I'm new to Blue Iris and was able to successfully connect to three different types of cameras. One, in particular, was quite painful (a Dlink Wi Fi camera) and I screwed around with settings for a long time before getting it to connect.

Then, I checked a little while later and was greeted with an unable to connect message. I was able to get it to connect again, but this morning connection was lost again.

Before diving in to specifics of this camera, I guess I'm looking for general advice, such as:

1. Is WiFi workable, or is wired connection vastly preferred.
2. Are there any good FAQs around for debugging problems like this?

Best regards
Doug

Hi Doug,

Wired tends to be better than wifi, as it doesn't get affected by noise so much. There are various ways for a wifi camera to get knocked offline, and it is difficult to figure out the cause. Powerline ethernet has similar issues, but that can usually be sorted by turning the sockets off and on again.

Wired with POE cameras is my favourite, as you can power them with the same ethernet cable.

Debugging is usually a process of trying everything, and asking multiple questions on the forum hoping that somebody else has already had the same issue
