Moving clips from \New to \Stored

Post by Thixotropic »

I put new clips in the local \New directory and the \Stored clips go on the NAS.

I started off keeping 10 days worth of clips in \New, then went to keeping 1 day's worth of clips there. Then I decided that didn't make much difference in overall load, so now I've reduced that to 1 hour. In other words, new clips go into \New and then after an hour BI moves them to the \Stored directory on the NAS.

I don't think this puts any undue load on the server; it's probably less of a load to move a few short clips than a full day's worth. The upshot is that they end up getting the NAS more quickly where they're a bit more secure.

How often do you all leave clips in the \New directory? What's your movement scheduling like?

I use BI for home security. So, archiving is not important. I've got the BI database on a 4tb Skyhawk. I get about a month of recordings, if I let it get that big. I let all Continuous, On trigger, and, Snapshots, live and die in the New folder. When I occasionally need to export, I export to another 'Saved Clips/Snapshots' folder on my data drive.

Same here (home security).

I have a powershell script that runs nightly that keeps 356 days of clips in the NAS \Stored directory so I don't have to think about it. It just prunes anything over 'X' days old. I also threw together a powershell script that that does mass conversion of BVR to MP4 (and it keeps the original timestamps). I haven't used it yet but maybe someday.
