Is there a good video or forum discussion explaining how to set up the motion detection to avoid triggers from flying insects and spiders etc?
Would people recommend using a separate IR source?

I have external IR sources for all my cameras except one. Not only does it eliminate almost all the triggers from flying buggies but it also gets rid of the 'white walker' eyes. I also turn off the internal IR source. The one camera still using the internal light is a major PIA with triggering from bugs. So much that I'm thinking of disabling it until I get an external IR light for it.
