New user remote access instructions

I am a new user looking to setup remote access for my six cameras. I've been reading the forums and find it all very confusing. Is there a Guide For Newbies that I can follow to help me in setting up remote access?
I've been able to connect my cameras via the Foscam app on my smartphone but only when I cam connected to my home WiFi. I can also see two of my cameras on my iPhone when I'm connected to the WiFi in my car. Doesn't that seem strange?
I'm appreciative of any help or direction the more experienced folks here can provide. I wish there was a local company\business that would assist me in the process but I don't think such businesses exist.
