Newbie here with a question that needs to explained so I can understand.
I have searched this forum and others and have found MANY answers, but I'm still confused with so many I'm still confused, Is my BI sending and receiving data using my Comcast internet. Screenshot of task manager with BI running and not.If it is how do i stop it.

Re: Data usage comcast
That screen is not your Comcast router. It is your local machine.
Of course your local machine is using its network to connect to cameras. If you want to know what is going on with your Comcast router you need to check in with that device.

Correct, almost all the the traffic you're seeing on that interface is with the networked cameras... not to the Internet. Yes you can filter/watch the traffic going to the Internet but it would appear with your current setup that might require a little effort. Checking your comcast router may be an option however in what I've seen I think that is pretty limited. Comcast should show your overall plan utilization but thats incredibly generic. Wireshark on your server is an option but you have to know what you're looking at. I have my cameras on a separate physical interface on my server and can confirm that the 'camera' connections are most if not essentially all of the traffic you're seeing. Very little is actually necessary for BI and the Internet.

Hopefully, this answer will clear up any confusion. Unless you're specifically connecting to cameras not physically on your home network that have been port-forwarded (or VPN'd) from a remote location (and you would know if you were), this traffic/bandwidth you're seeing is local only, not contributing to your Comcast data usage.Mydadsson wrote: ↑Tue Aug 10, 2021 1:39 pmNewbie here with a question that needs to explained so I can understand.

This traffic shows up on your network adapter because that network adapter transfers data for both your local network and brings Internet connectivity to your PC. There are several basic network topologies that would result in what you're seeing:
- PC is connected to PoE switch. Cameras are connected to PoE switch. Internet router is connected to PoE switch. Simply unplug your Internet router to verify that the data keeps flowing the same even without the Internet. No change in that background bandwidth usage? This means that what you're seeing on your PC is local network traffic between your cameras and Blue Iris; this data is not flowing through your Comcast Internet connection. This local background streaming is how Blue Iris monitors your cameras for motion and records their video feeds, and does not affect your Internet data usage, even though, on your PC, it is all counted the same under your Ethernet adapter. One way to separate them would be to connect your PC to the Internet via WiFi, and use the Ethernet port solely for the cameras. This way, your Internet traffic would appear under WiFi, while local camera traffic would appear under Ethernet. Note that you would have to manually set static IP addresses for both your PC's Ethernet adapter and each camera, as your Internet router would no longer be present on the local network to automatically hand out IP addresses to connected devices.
- PC is connected to Internet router. PoE switch is connected to Internet router. Cameras are connected to PoE switch. Your camera data is needlessly passing through the switch portion of your Internet router, although this does not affect your Internet usage. Either modify your network topology to match #1 above, or use method #3 below to check for unintended Internet usage.
- PC is connected to Internet router. Cameras are connected to Internet router, perhaps with individual PoE injectors, or via WiFi. Again, your camera data is flowing through the switch (and possibly WiFi) portion of your Internet router, so you can't disconnect it or turn it off. However, you should be able to disconnect the cable/phone wire coming in from outside to your Internet router. During this, your cameras and BI data usage should remain unchanged while you temporarily lose Internet connectivity. Once again, this proves that this data usage is internal, local to your network, and not flowing through your Comcast Internet connection.
