Run as a windows service makes PC unresponsive?

Post by EDCK »

Blueiris runs fine and everything works as it should but when i enable "Run as a windows service" my PC becomes unresponsive, it takes a min for chrome to open, takes a min to bring up task manger even typing is delayed everything is just sluggish!.

Disable "run as a service" and all runs fine again.

I have tired clean installs of Windows 11 23H2, different passwords and admin accounts nothing seems to help. My CPU runs at 3-4 percent load and GPU at 5 percent it's a Intel i7-12700K with 32 GB of RAM and a NVMe drive.

Any ideas?

Doesn't quite seem right, but I'm wondering if your anti-virus solution is doing this. Can you disable it and test ? It's going to be something weird, and not setting AV exclusions fits that, but then it should affect it when not running as a service too. :!:

Have a look if Reliability History gives any clues.

Yes i have turned windows anti-virus off.

Would a hardware issue cause this? I ask since on another PC Blueirirs will run fine using the same settings, win ver etc.

Makes no sense.

it is possible that it could be a bad memory module etc. Have you done any stress tests on the computer to rule out this possibility!

I’m having the same problem, I didn’t have it on my Lenovo, but since I’ve switched to Geekom iT12, it doesn’t work and I’ve had two separate new units only running Blue Iris. Blue Iris bogged down whenever I switched it to a service but work great just running it as a program.
12th generation Intel core I 7–12650H 2.30 GHz, 32 GB ram.

I’ve emailed Support that kind of goes slow taking a couple days to answer each question so if anybody has some ideas I’d appreciate it. I need to get it running as a service so that it will start up after a power failure.

Did you check it with AV disabled ? Worth it as a test.

I have had Blue Iris working on various PC's as a service all the way back to a home build with an AMD bulldozer, so I am thinking this could be a Windows or hardware issue rather than BI5.

I've had a look through the Help file, and that states:
When Blue Iris runs as a service, the window will always be invisible as the service runs “in the background” without UI. You should also be mindful that the service may not have access to your file’s drive specification or access to run it. To overcome this, you should run the service with your own Windows login rather than Local System.
1. Are there any BI5 error messages ? Tick to create text file for Log. It only makes one file a month so you can drop it onto Desktop.
2. Are there any Windows error messages ?
3. Have you tried it with no cameras ?

As an aside, I had major problems getting Homeseer HS4 to work as a service, and I presently use Startup Delayer to get that running on power up. I think I need another look at that, as I'm fairly sure I have now removed the hardware that made it fail. I hope I left notes

Hi all,

I have seen the same thing on my end, I have 15 BI installs and every install has done the same thing. It appears to be using excessive CPU usage when running as a service. When you turn off run as a service the CPU usage goes down.

There must be something in common here. Do you want to list pc and OS specs for one pc to see if we can find it ? We can then send it to Support. Best to find as much evidence as we can first.

More than happy to help out with the troubleshooting

Most of the machines I'm running have the specs below

BI 5.9.6.1
Supermicro X11SAE
i7 - 7700
GTX 1050
8gb 2400Mhz
Windows 10 Pro - 22H2/19045

I'll see if I can do some testing on the machine below to see if that's having the same issue

BI 5.9.5.1
Pro WS W480-ACE
i7-10700K
GTX 1050 Ti
8gb 2666Mhz
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC - 17763

if you need anything else in the meantime let me know
