You are not going to like my answer....
The only way to fix this I think is to request BI staff support you in getting your key back again. But without paying for support, well, you don't get support.
So unless someone knows how to dig the key out of a backed up registry of some sort (assuming you have some registry backups) you are out of luck unless you renew your support plan.

I think it's worth sending a Support email as long as you still have the original email address, but you are right that they tightened up on this a few years ago due to being overloaded with Support requests.
Do you have backups that could be checked ? I don't know where you would find the key, but I'm sure we would figure it out.

The BI reg files are not the same as a windows reg file, I think that they must be imported in BI as they are a special compressed format unique to BI

I hate to harp on this. Why do you expect the staff at BI to spend time helping you out of your jam when you do not pay for support?

Why wouldn't he? He did pay for a lifetime license. Seems to me it's basically his only shot.
Perhaps v4 has the integrated email support template that extracts and uses the registration key in the subject line to identify the product status as does v5?

I think it does and worth checking, but feel sure it will be empty here. I think this issue will be sorted by matching the original email address that Support may have.

Yes, he paid for the legal right to use the license he purchased. Now he wants staff at BI to spend energy to do something for him. To support him. To help him. Even though the company did nothing in any way to cause this problem.
