Wyze cams

Post by cmccarter »

I have 5 of these v2 and v3 on my network(I was cheap) it seems their rtsp firmware has issues. All 5 of the cams constantly drop video then come back.
Looking for replacements that won't cost me an arm and leg. Most are inside or covered.

If you are after cheap indoor cameras I think Pogo recommends the Tapo ones. Have a look on the forum for his threads.

I still have a Wyse2 (Neos UK clone) and it's destined for the bin of doom when I can get a round tuit. Bad wifi even when it's next to a wifi router. Bah humbug.

I used to run several WyzeCam v.3s with their Beta RTSP firmware with very few problems on my wi-fi setup. It is admittedly fairly robust and channelized for both efficiency and reliability in a very clean RF environment.

Then I discovered the wz_mini_hacks Github project and went all in on the USB/PoE/ETH approach which was (and still is) a whole new ballgame for the v.3s. That said, I eventually phased out several them in favor of more capable POE IP cameras for certain locations but still have three on wi-fi using the original Wyze RTSP Beta firmware with no issues. One is even in my shop 150 feet and two exterior walls away using an antenna I installed from a YouTube video and works fine. I have another with a 6mm lens and varifocal ring for super close-up messing around. Fun, fun, fun.

As for the Tapos, a great alternative to the WyzeCams on most levels. The C110 is the gem of the bargain cams at around $22 and comes equipped with RTSP/ONVIF/Two-Way audio and no Internet or cloud service required for anything except registration for the warranty. Onboard SD slot, strong 2.4GHz wi-fi, very nice 2K resolution and part of the TP-Link family with a great app.

Buy a couple and play with them. There's very little not to like except maybe the power supply which is 9V and not the typical 5V USB and the nighttime performance is limited compared to the Wyze v.3's (which is actually incredible for a $30 hobby cam).

Another possible negative that I neglected to specifically mention is the C110s are an indoor (or protected environment) device which the OP did indicate were his general conditions.

Anyone else considering a Tapo for an outdoor environment should look at their other economical models for the task.
