Blue Iris

I want a system that will set off alarm when anyone (A Human, not dogs, cats, birds or waving awnings and plants) jumps over my back wall and front fence, at the second they do it, to start recording and to alert me.

At night via a wi-fi to my smart phone and by day with an alarm , I would love to use a recording from Star Trek: "Intruder alert, intruder alert"

And if I am away from home by smart phone again...

Not 5 to 10 seconds after they are already in my yard and then to lose them, simple disappear.

I want two-way audio so I can tell them to get the heck out of my yard.

Or talk with a delivery person.

Other that being a bit out of date, like instructing on CodeAI Bata 2.0.0 when it is now 2.6.5 and pages do not match up.

IE None of my cameras even my 4MP have a second stream, so I cannot dual stream, but his telling the system to not update unless needed took my CPU from 100% to 20%.

“The Learn Blue Iris” videos are working an older version not the latest…The current download of Blue Iris is 5.9.8.2 and he is working on 5.6.73 and there were a bunch of changes from 5.6.7.3….

And his copy of CodeAI is a Bata 2.0.0 when it is now 2.6.5 and pages do not match up, and again a couple of steps in and we on the wrong pages. I have the latest version.

His videos Looked great until I get a couple steps in and then we skid off screen.

BUT he did show how to find dual stream which none of my cameras seem to have but also how to not have them record or even run unless triggered so my CPU usage is down from 100% to 30%.

And how to select new folders not on my C drive but on my E drive.

So now IF I can to stop every camera from recording birds, cats (YES really) and cars…

I want just people and only people that are in my yard not on the side walk.

After all I have AI cameras, and Code AI installed and yet they record everything BUT people, or are fairly late recording people.

It is odd but most of the times I or my wife walks into the yard in to the cameras range of view, we are not recorded…or it is spotty.

Also how to use a two-way voice/sound.

And is there any way to control brightness and contrast?

All of this is beginning to look like a waste of a lot of time and money….

I think you have jumped in the deep end and taken too much on. Step by step and continuous learning is the secret to BI5 happiness:

1. Most cameras will have two or even three streams unless you bought extremely cheap ones. Did you use "Find/Inspect" to check for sub streams ?
2. Really cheap cameras will not work well in the dark just when you really need them to work.
3. The idea is to do motion detection on the sub streams as it uses MUCH less cpu. Intel cpu/gpu hardware acceleration may help too.
4. CodeProject AI (CPAI) is a third party freeware add on that is basically always in Beta. I believe the senior developer has now backed off from it at version 2.8.0 - It probably prevented them earning enough money to live on since it is free and everybody is always asking for more and complaining on their forum.
5. Two way audio only works with a small section of cameras. I think the BI5 Help file has the details.
6. I'm fairly certain LBI is not Ken. Ken sounds more like Adam West when he did Batman, and he was writing software when I bought my Amiga 1200. There will be official BI5 videos on YouTube, but they were done a few years ago by Sam Varghesesa before he left the company. Good for basics, but not for all of the new stuff.
7. Look for videos on YouTube by "The Hook up". He has done a lot of very good more recent videos to cover basic set up, AI etc.
8. Brightness and contrast are usually dealt with in the camera webserver itself before the image is sent to BI5. Depending on the camera, BI5 may be able to make adjustments though, and there may also be http commands available too.

9. Two different things there. CodeProject AI is for users who don't have AI cameras. It is resource heavy but can be tuned and additional models created, i.e "parcel" etc. If your cameras have AI and can already identify "person" and can send that info to BI5 as an ONVIF command, then that may be your simplest and best option without CPAI.

I suggest you create a few threads to get the basics of your cameras sorted. Add screenshots of camera settings. It will work !

No I did what the guy at LDI said to do: But your suggestion of using the Find/Inspect did work, but only when I (for some reason) tried a second click and bingo. It took two clicks to get most of the complete data.

This is the only cameras that do not make a big thing for their Human AI:

All show great night vision, most have full color night vision with built in bright white lights that I find make good security lighting as well.

So even with Blue Iris having a link during the install to download Codeproject AI as all my cameras now come with their own AI these programs are worthless and may even have conflicts??

So should I uninstall Code Project or just turn it off as well as the weak AI in Blue Iris?? If so, please tell me how.


I bet “senior developer has now backed off from it” is because nearly every camera even the $29.00 ones now come with their own AI his project is becoming obsolete. Been there done that, twice, my TV repair and sales of used color TVs was killed off my Solid State TVs, and my prop making (toy ray guns) has been killed off by 3D printers.

My main cameras have two-way sound. I do seem to be getting audio now as I found out my systems is not liking the audio speakers plugged in, I am getting a set of USB speakers and if they do not work will get a sound card.

An older, but very well done and easy to follow set of Blue Iris tutorials that is well put together in logical segments that stick to the point with no BS.

While indeed an older version lacking many of the newer features, the concepts and basic functionality of the software are essentially the same.

For a very effective rudimentary introduction to the overall functionality of Blue Iris, I've found this to be the best out there.

As for CPAI, it's the LAST thing a beginner needs when learning BI. Stick to learning the firmware of the cameras themselves and you'll be much farther ahead much faster in learning how the inboard camera AI features can work to effectively achieve your goals. Blue Iris can then enhance that on many levels once the interactive capabilities are better understood.

It's a journey, not a walk in the park.

Thanks but as this is my first ever work with any kind of security system, I need full and correct instructions. I have been working, building and using computers sense a IBM 8088, and DOS and Windows 3.11. So I am fairly able to work with programs, WHEN I CAN GET CORRECT instructions.

Video instructions are GREAT, and MAN O MAN do I want them. BUT:

I am beyond simple installing; a SEVEN old tutorial is next to no help at all. That is even older that LBIs 4-year-old instructions.

I have been trying to follow “Learn Blue Iris” step by step instructions when it led to a no long there Pages, or led to a no long function, or led to incorrect changes. He also supports Project AI which the first replay seems to say I do not need it and may even be bad for my needs and use.

Sorry but these older INACCURATE instructions is about as bad and following BAD GPS directions and ending up in a very bad part of a town.

All it takes is good instructions that are working on the current version.

I really need it to do what I spent all this money and time wiring my cameras and all the time learning about cameras, their field of view and so on.

As it is now here is what is happening: I believe some of these problems are caused by following LBI bad instructions.


I walked I front of my three cameras in my front and back Yards, all three yard’ cameras FAILED to see me and record me, two saw me part of the time, as I stood in front of them for 10 seconds, at the count of 6 I raised my right hand and twilled my fingers, at ten I raised both hands and twilled my fingers.

No camera recorded my walking out the door and no camera recorded the some 15 to 20 seconds of my total time I was in its viewed of view, and the two working cameras I appeared and disappeared suddenly.

I did the same to my three rear cameras and I did the same 10 seconds bit.

All these three cameras responded very slowly, I would suddenly appear, part way thought my 10 count, and disappear before the ten count. NO Camera recorded my walking out to it and no camera recorded my walking back to the door.

I have seen this SPOTTY action when my wife walks on into the yards as well.

This will not do, a good 5 to 10 seconds of the beginning of an intruder is not recorded, nor is the total time any intruder is recorded is incomplete.

And if it does not “see” them I will not get an alert…

And I DO NOT COUNT on ANY COPS coming to our aid in time. My whole point in all of this is to be warned as anything starts and to then take care of it myself, as no one will save us.

I really want and need this system up and running.

In that case, Blue Iris is the furthest thing from a suitable solution for your needs.

The "CORRECT INSTRUCTIONS" are how the program can be used for a user's particular needs and experience level once an understanding of its basic functionality is achieved. The flexibility of BI is its beauty and its genius. It is what you make it.

Your expectations relative to your experience level, not to mention your general approach to garnering useful information and advice from a peer-to-peer support forum clearly display your need for the fat crayons and sidewalk chalk to get you started, not the blueprints.

If you're not interested in useful advice, every Blue Iris screen has subject related help links. Use them. And read the BI documentation..., starting at page 1.

Well I just learned that Blue Iris security cameras operation software is NOT yours, you cannot truly own it as the licenses is subject to being checked and cleared by Blue Iris’s home systems, and as they have a major crash…so:

MANY of their customers now have non-work programs.

And they are NOT seemly taking care of them as there are no replies from company personal:

“Money grabbing company- Well it was good software...not so much anymore. Seems like they are pushing to force you to pay a subscription fee. I purchased version 5 via a upgrade option. Now They are saying the version of V5 they put out is not supported by my version 5 license and I need to pay for their yearly service. I paid for version 5 and expect you to honor that. NOT COOL. Maybe it is time to move on. The app was screaming at me to upgrade my version to the latest. After updating the program to the newest version of V5. It went into Eval mode. Contacted support and they tell me to pay for the yearly support option.”

WTF…well that is that.

Oh well, back to the drawing board..., on the sidewalk with a coloring book.

If you need a full featured complex system for your first installation you should hire a professional.

There is no way (in any field) a beginner can take on an advanced topic with guaranteed success.

You are asking too much.

This is false unless it is new news in the last month. Well, part of it is false. Nearly all sw is licensed so that is true. But the non-working part it false.

When you purchase a license it is lifetime with the limitation that you are only entitled to the version that was active during your support period (first year included with purchase price). To keep getting updates you need to pay for support.
