New Computer

Can I move my BI 5 install to a new computer by using my reg key and config back up? Is that possible and legal?

Yes. As well as the "Export settings" button in BI5 general settings, there is also a button to "Deactivate" your existing licence so your licence is free for the next PC, but do that after you have exported everything.

I do not think a backup/move/restore will migrate the license. I think I recall having to deactivate on the old and reactivate on the new.

BI running since 2021 without a problem but win10 computer hard drive failed. New Computer Install BI Version 5.4.9.14 7/23/2021 with the original key. I was not able to deactivate BI from the old computer. Too many key entry and it lock me out. I believe it required a key reset? I did not subscribe for a maintenance contract. Do I need to buy another BI/KEY?

Support key, not a new key. But nuance aside...

Two schools of thought on this...
1) you want BI to support you by doing something for you even though you chose not to pay for support.
or
2) you deserve to have BI do stuff for you because you once bought a license and then chose to not pay for support.

Send an email to Support with your licence info and ask if they can reset it for you. Worth trying. Time to start backing up your computers too :!:
