Need help with Multi-instance Blue Iris Setup

Post by just_learning111 »

Hello everyone! I hope I am posting this in the right thread, if not I apologize. I am having an issue with Blue Iris taking up a lot of resources and need some pointers/help. I have kind of a different setup. I am running a host server with an i9-13900k, 128gb 4400 mhz DDR5, RTX A4000, 10g network card, and a ton of storage. I have two Blue Iris instances, both on separate VMs, one for each "site". I have GPU Passthrough set up for hardware decoding which seems to run fine. Anyways, one site has about 60 cams and the other has about half as much. I split up the ram and cores accordingly. Most all the cameras are Vivoteks except a few Hanwhas. I feel like the hardware should be overkill for this kind of setup but I constantly have to restart services and run database repairs to get the instances back up and running. They end up taking up more resources over time and end up crashing. Sub-streams are configured, I set them up by following one of the Blue Iris Guides online. I am tasked with trying this figure this out but I am just now learning about IP Cameras etc. Is there something I am not doing right? If anyone needs more info on my setup or how I have something configured please let me know.

Thank you!!

What version of BI are you running, what version of windows is running in the VM machines, what VM system are you using, sort of required information for anyone to begin to make any suggestions.

I personally have 3 BI systems all running on real hardware and they are rock solid! Running BI on virtual hardware is not something I would even consider doing as the real hardware is much easier to troubleshoot but each to there own!

Sorry, forgot to add. The host/VMs are all running Windows Server 2022 and I have version 5.9.9.21 installed for BI. Also, I am using Hyper-V. Yeah, that's just what I have to work with. Technically it's not my setup, I am just tasked with working on it.

Do you have the desktop experience loaded on the server vm's, I have read some post either on this forum or the IPCAMTALK forum of people having performance problems running BI in a virtual environment!

Are the server VM's running any other process's besides BI?

Are there other VM running on the host that is running the two BI server processes?

I am also wondering why the choice of a Server OS rather than Windows 10 or 11?

Yes it is desktop experience, it is only the two VMs on the host, and the VMs are running minimal services. In task manager, it is BI that is consuming everything. To be honest, I have no explanation for why they are running on a Server OS. For camera configuration I have it running direct-to-disk recording, main streams are running at 30fps while sub-streams are at 15. I have played with the Hardware Decoding by using Nvidia or not using it all and the problem persists. I am not running any of the AI integration, only using it for a group of people to be able to view the cameras while on the network. I have it recording continuously with triggers enabled, cause the higher-ups like to view the triggers on the timeline. Everything else it pretty much "stock". This is all a learning experience for me, for which I am grateful but it has gotten to the point where I need some help.

How are VM's configured as far as number of CPU's and cores etc, I recall reading something in this regard that if they are set wrong it causes the VM's to run very inefficiently. I will try to see if I can find the details as I don't recall what they should be set to!
